Your may not be aware that:

How will this affect your business and your life?

Some people are calling this event “Baby Y2K”. Congress has approved the change to daylight-saving time in an effort to conserve electricity; that is, by increasing daylight-saving by one month. The new daylight-saving time will be kick-started three weeks early this year, on March 11, and end a week later, on November 4.

This change has the possibility to throw off the internal clock of VCR’s, computer, and schedules that could affect multi-million dollar stock trades, hospitals, and electronic calendars such as Outlook, Act, etc.

"It's going to be a pain," says Gartner analyst Cameron Haight. "But it's certainly not a Y2K-style event."

FACT:  The U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, passed by the U.S. Congress July, 2005, extended Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the U.S. by approximately four weeks.

FACT:  All of the United States except:  Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, Canada and the United States share DST, Mexico, Mexico will not be following the new DST 2007 rules.

What does it mean? Crisis or not ?

This will not turn out to be a doomsday drama like the potential Y2K computer bug.

During the so-called “Y2K” crisis I spoke to over 100,000 people at churches, school, universities, etc. to calm people’s fears about a possible crisis, which didn’t really turn out to be anything but a blip on the radar screen.

When I gave my lectures and seminars, I suggested that if they were prepared then there was nothing to worry about.  In my opinion, if you are prepared and are aware of effects of “Baby Y2K” then, this too will be only a very small blip on the radar screen.

What could happen if you’re not prepared?

If you don’t take proactive steps, any electronic gadget/device that adjusts to daylight-saving time will start an hour later.

Which means that  the "Baby Y2K" could cause: Your VCR will record an hour late. You could be an hour late for appointments that you have scheduled. Stock trades set to trade/sell at a certain times could happen later than intended, and could cost millions. Buildings that are programmed to unlock at 8 a.m. could stay locked. Airline monitors could display wrong departure/arrival times.

How should you prepare?

  1. Begin at your computer.  Many of you have heard me recommend that, if you are using Microsoft Windows XP, you should update to service pack 2 and have the update set to auto. If you already have updates set to auto, then Microsoft should have delivered the patch on February 13th on “Patch Tuesday”.

Windows

If you want to double check you can go to: www.microsoft.com/dst2007 and download the patch manually.

If your business if running any Microsoft application go to: www.microsoft.com/dst2007 to check out what application could be affected by “Baby Y2K” just to be sure.

MAC (updated 2-26-2007)

  1. Other electronic gadgets/devices: All of your electronic gadget/devices should be manually changed; this would include VCR’s, Climate-control systems, etc. the night before.

Blackberry (updated 2-26-2007)

If you have a Blackberry pager or PDA, you'll find more information at: http://www.blackberry.com/DST2007/patch/index2.shtml

Palm (updated 2-26-2007)

If you own a Palm device, you'll will find more information at: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/dst.html.

If your VCR was made before August of 2005, it must be manually updated March 11 and then changed back again on April 1st because those VCR’s are programmed to change at the normal daylight-saving time.

You will need to make similar adjustments on October 28th and again on November 4th. Your cell phones, cable and satellite boxes should be updated by your service provider.

  1. It would be an excellent idea to print out your appointments the night before, if you use a computer to keep track of your appointments.
